Is it possible to paint our way to a more sunnier outlook? Perhaps—especially with some of the most iconic rooms in history as our guide.

For centuries, world leaders, cultural cognoscenti, and designers alike have turned to the color yellow to enliven rooms, thanks to its glow as a backdrop for candlelight and its power to re-create the atmosphere of sunnier climes inside. Today, the color—with its mood-altering qualities and just a tinge of nostalgia—feels as fresh, relevant, and necessary as ever as we're spending more time at home than we have for decades.

The hue has a surprising range in tone, depending on the amount of black or white mixed in, and shade, based on the whether the yellow skews more orange or green. And its brightening potential is just as potent for a living room color scheme as it is in a dining room, entry hall, bedroom, or kitchen.

Find your ideal shade of yellow right here, from pale butter and bold citrus to more unexpected colors like warm ochre and mustard.

Mario Buatta's Layered Lemon New York Living Room

Inspired by Nancy Lancaster's famous drawing room in London, not to mention the English country look popularized by his friend and designer John Fowler, New York decorator Mario Buatta chose this sunny shade for his own living room, where it served as crisp foil for his collections, from books to dog paintings and more.

Potter Christopher Spitzmiller is well known for his love of color—and his love of country life. So perhaps it's no wonder he would channel the spirit of iconic living rooms decorated by the likes of John Fowler and Mario Buatta for his own country home in New York's Hudson Valley. The walls are painted Sweet Butter by Benjamin Moore.

Dandelion-yellow lacquered walls in the dining room of this Hamptons house designed by Katie Ridder reinforce the laid-back vibe created by the classic summer house design: rattan chairs (Janus et Cie), a pineapple-footed mahogany table, and painted floors inspired by a Moroccan checkerboard tile pattern. Sir John Soane's Limoncello Drawing Room in London

Swathed in yellow from head to toe, walls to upholstery, the drawing room in the home of architect Sir John Soane (now a museum) was intended to re-create the golden sunshine of Rome or Pompeii. Although the saturated shade would not have been altogether shocking during the Regency period, its monochromatic application reads as surprisingly modern. Today, the color is known as Soanian yellow.

Thomas Jefferson's Honey-Yellow Dining Room at Monticello

In 2011, after spending many post-Jeffersonian years being covered with blue paint, the walls of the dining room at Monticello were returned to chrome yellow following paint analysis studies. It's understood that Jefferson went to great lengths to acquire lead chromate yellow pigment after it was invented in France in the early 19th century.

Sister Parish's Yellow Oval Room at the White House

Located on the south side of the second floor of the White House and overlooking the South Lawn and the Ellipse, the Yellow Oval Room may be the most well-known yellow room in America.

The earliest description of the room, which dates to the John Adams administration, mentions yellow wallpaper with gilded stars. Two administrations later, Dolly Madison outfitted it in yellow damask in 1809. This image shows the room during the administration of President John F. Kennedy decorated by Sister Parish and Stephane Boudin.

Michael S. Smith's Yellow Oval Room at the White House

In 2010, California designer Michael S. Smith was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Committee for the Preservation of the White House, and his decoration of the American landmark is chronicled in Designing History: The Extraordinary Art & Style of the Obama White House (Rizzoli, September 2020).

In Smith's redecoration of the Yellow Oval Room, shown here, paintings by Paul Cézanne (left) and Daniel Garber from the White House collection flank the fireplace in the Yellow Oval Room. Antique toys from the Smithsonian are displayed on the shelves to the left and sofas by Jonas are covered in a Claremont damask.

Meg Braff's Throwback Tropical Bedroom in Palm Beach

For her bedroom for the 2019 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach, designer Meg Braff played off the color palette of the Florida locale by custom-coloring one of her wallpapers, Rainforest, in mango yellow and bougainvillea pink. The low-slung poster bed, adorned in bedding by Leontine Linens and upholstered in Braff's Beverly Hills fabric, gives the space an early 1970s vibe, as do the moments of vintage brass, acanthus motifs, caning, lucite, and bamboo.

In the entry hall of designer Susan Zises Green's Nantucket home, antique pieces—a rooster weathervane Zises Green purchased at auction in Nantucket, a pair of amethyst hurricanes she found at Price Glover Antiques, and a selection of her Nantucket lightship baskets—set the stage for the collected look that runs throughout her home. The walls are painted Pale Avocado by Benjamin Moore.
